Research Activities

I am intrigued by the plurality of organism interactions in the aquatic environment, in particular by interactions at the intra- and interspecific level, with special focus on animal-microbe symbioses. I have worked with different model and host organisms including marine sponges and gorgonian corals, and participated in several field campaigns along the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, sampling marine organisms such as mussels, limpets, gastropods, algae and seagrasses. My doctoral studies focus on the biotechnological potential of the marine sponge metamobilome - i.e. the pool of all mobile genetic elements present in a given setting, in which we are looking in particular for novel chitinase enzymes.
